The IUD Removal Process at Mint Reproductive Health
Removing an IUD is a simple procedure that typically takes just a few minutes. Our experienced team works gently and carefully to ensure your comfort throughout the process.
What to Expect During an IUD Removal
We offer uncomplicated removals, expulsion management, same-week appointments, and replacement procedures when needed.
Step One: Consultation
We’ll review your medical history and discuss any questions or concerns you may have before the procedure. We recommend taking 400mg ibuprofen or 650mg acetaminophen prior to the removal.
Step Two: Positioning
You will lie comfortably on the examination table in a relaxed position, similar to a pelvic exam. We will do an internal ultrasound to determine the position of your IUD before removal.
Step Three: Speculum Insertion
A speculum is gently inserted into the vagina to visualize the cervix, just as in a Pap smear or IUD placement.
Step Four: Locating the IUD Strings
We will locate the IUD strings at the cervical opening. If the strings are visible and accessible, removal is usually straightforward.
Step Five: Removal of the IUD
Using a gentle grasp on the strings with specialized forceps, the IUD is carefully withdrawn from the uterus. Most women experience only mild discomfort or cramping during this step.
Step Six: Post-Removal Care
After removal, we discuss next steps based on your plans—whether you’re considering another form of contraception, pregnancy, or no further contraception. We also provide guidance on what to expect afterward, including potential mild cramping or spotting.
Same-Week IUD Appointments
We understand that some patients need a quick turnaround, so we accept self referrals and offer same-week appointments for IUD removal to accommodate your schedule.
- Your Comfort is Our Priority: Our team is trained in trauma-informed care, ensuring that your experience is gentle, respectful, and supportive. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask.
