Reassurance ultrasounds are scans that are provided outside of routine prenatal care and are meant to provide peace of mind for expectant parents. Routine first trimester ultrasounds are offered to most parents between weeks 11-14 based on new Canadian guidelines. At Mint, we recognize that some may benefit from an earlier ultrasound.
You may be a good candidate for an early reassurance ultrasound if you:
- Have experienced pregnancy loss in the past — early confirmation of viability can help reduce anxiety.
- Conceived with fertility treatment (IVF or IUI) — monitoring implantation and early development is often recommended
- Are having concerning symptoms such as bleeding, cramping, or pain in early pregnancy.
- Have a history of ectopic pregnancy or risk factors such as tubal surgery.
- Are feeling anxious about your pregnancy and would benefit emotionally from early reassurance.
- Have irregular cycles or uncertain dates, where ultrasound can help establish accurate gestational age.
- May be carrying more than one baby, as early ultrasound can confirm twins or higher-order multiples.
At Mint Reproductive, both abdominal and intravaginal bedside ultrasounds are performed by our highly trained naturopathic physicians. We offer same week appointments and provide information about your scan in real time. It’s important to note that these scans are not diagnostic and still require follow up with your regular maternal care providers and a routine dating ultrasound as recommended by current guidelines.
