Are IUD insertions painful?

The time has come for us to stop minimizing pain in women.  The reality is some, but not all, patients experience pain while having an IUD placed.  At Mint Reproductive Health, we aren’t afraid to talk about this fact and address our patients’ fears head-on.  For some, the insertion process can cause severe pain, cramping, nausea and sweating.  Others feel mild cramping or nothing at all.

Who might experience more pain during an IUD Insertion?

While it’s hard to predict who might experience more pain, there are a few things we look out for:

  • A history of trauma
  • Chronic pelvic pain or pain with intercourse
  • Painful periods
  • Recent childbirth
  • Difficulty with speculum exams (or never had one)
  • Anxiety about medical procedures

Having these risk factors doesn’t mean you aren’t a good candidate for an IUD.  It just means you may need a more tailored plan for your comfort.

How can you make IUD insertions more comfortable?

Education & Preparation: Studies show that well-informed patients have a smoother IUD experience. At Mint, we provide detailed guidance on what to expect before, during, and after your insertion. You control the pace, and how much we explain, ensuring a stress-free, comfortable experience.

Personalized Insertion Plan: During your screening consultation, we’ll discuss your past experiences, concerns, and preferences to create a customized plan for your procedure.

Pain management options you will be offered:

  • Oral Analgesics – Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can reduce cramping and inflammation before and after insertion.
  • Cervical Block (Lidocaine Injection) – Local anesthetic numbs the cervix, significantly reducing insertion discomfort.
  • Inhaled Anesthetic Gas (Penthrox) – Methoxyflurane is an inhaled gas that rapidly relieves pain and anxiety during the procedure. Patients control the dose through a handheld inhaler.
  • Cervical Dilation – In select cases, we use medication to soften and dilate the cervix, making insertion easier.
  • Optimal Timing – IUD insertions are scheduled during or right after your period, when the cervix is naturally more open.
  • Pacing – we use a slower and gentler method to ensure you never feel rushed.  We work to create a calm, supportive environment where you’re in control every step of the way.  You can pause or stop the procedure at any time.
