What Is an IUD and Why Choose One?
The IUD, or intrauterine device, is a convenient and reliable form of contraception. But the benefits of IUDs don’t end there, more and more people are choosing IUDs for reasons other than birth control, including managing heavy or painful periods and perimenopausal bleeding. But how do you know which IUD is right for you? Check out our Mint Guide to choosing the right IUD for your body and lifestyle.
The first decision you need to make is whether you want a hormonal or non-hormonal IUD. In Canada, there are two hormonal options—Kyleena and Mirena—as well as a range of copper IUDs.
Kyleena IUD: Benefits, Uses, and Who It’s Best For
Both Kyleena and Mirena contain a hormone called levonorgestrel that acts locally within the uterus.
The Kyleena is approved for five years in Canada and is a slightly smaller device with a lower dose of hormone. Kyleena is a great option for those whose primary goal is contraception and who prefer lower doses of hormones.
Mirena IUD: How It Works and When to Consider It
The Mirena IUD is approved for up to eight years in Canada and has a slightly higher dose of progestin hormone. This makes it the ideal choice for perimenopause or other cases where controlling bleeding and cramping are a priority.
Common Side Effects of Hormonal IUDs
The side effects from the two hormonal IUDs are similar but occur slightly more often with Mirena. They can include changes in the menstrual cycle, breast tenderness, mood changes, headaches, acne, and weight gain.
Copper IUDs: Non-Hormonal Birth Control
In contrast, non-hormonal IUDs contain copper, which creates an inhospitable environment for sperm, preventing fertilization and implantation. Because they are non-hormonal, they do not interfere with ovulation and do not have any effects outside of the uterus.
The major drawback of the copper IUD is its tendency to make periods heavier and more painful. Non-hormonal IUDs are ideal for people who have light, non-painful periods, want to avoid hormonal side effects, and prefer not to have any changes to their ovulatory cycle.
New IUD Options in Canada: Ballerine IUB
There are many copper IUD options available in Canada that range from 3–10 years of approved use. They are typically T-shaped, but newer, smaller, and more flexible devices are now available, like the Ballerine IUB.
